Born on 1 September 1959, I was educated at Bablake School, Coventry. In 1977 I joined my family’s engineering business, becoming Managing Director in 1985. In 1987 I sold the company, then employing twenty-two staff on two sites with turnover of £1 million, to the RTZ Corporation plc, utilising Any Other Business, established in 1985, to pursue other interests.

Following a successful fund-raising project undertaken in 1990 for the School of Theatre Studies at the University of Warwick, I was appointed Development Director of Warwick Arts Centre, the largest arts complex of its kind in the UK.

Sponsorship agreements were established with regional and national companies such as Conoco, IBM, PowerGen plc and National Grid, generating substantial income. In 1996 I secured a £3.2 million UK National Lottery grant for the Centre's development. In 1997 I implemented the University’s alumni giving programme, achieving a sum of £140,000 in six months.

During the Summer of 1997 I decided to refocus my ongoing activities through Any Other Business.
